Unit Chambers’ unique approach to wellbeing and work-life balance for barristers

At Unit Chambers, we understand that a thriving legal practice begins with a supportive and resilient working environment. As a modern family law set based in Manchester and Liverpool, we prioritise the wellbeing and work-life balance of our barristers, recognising that a healthy and fulfilled team leads to better advocacy and client service.

A holistic approach to wellbeing

In 2023, we launched a comprehensive Wellbeing Policy aimed at building a supportive and sustainable work environment. This policy serves as a proactive measure to address stress and prevent burnout, meeting our members' diverse needs while promoting resilience.

Physical wellbeing

We encourage physical health by organising bi-monthly hikes, themed lunches, and exercise-focused socials. Our recent survey indicated that 92% of members feel these activities positively impact their work-life balance and reduce stress.

Emotional and mental health support

We provide biweekly “Tune-In” sessions, virtual and in-person, often led by Wellbeing Officer Amjad Kadhim, a certified Mental Health First Aider. Additionally, our “Walk and Talk” and “Coffee and Chat” initiatives offer confidential spaces, ensuring members feel supported in both personal and professional matters.

Embedding wellbeing in daily operations

We integrate wellbeing into our daily operations and policies to create a balanced and supportive environment.

  • Formal practice reviews: Annual reviews, led by our Diary Manager, Emma Wall, include wellbeing assessments to maintain manageable workloads and balanced career progression. Informal check-ins supplement these reviews, promoting a continuous dialogue around workload and support.

  • Anti-bullying and harassment policy: We uphold a robust Anti-Bullying and Harassment Policy, with documented processes for managing complaints. Regular training and anonymised feedback on incidents help us monitor trends and promote a respectful, inclusive culture.

Supportive community and culture

At Unit Chambers, we encourage a collaborative and inclusive culture where every member feels valued and supported. Our open-plan office is complemented by silent work pods and private conference rooms, offering flexibility to suit various working styles. We recognise that being a self-employed barrister can be isolating, but Unit offers a sociable and supportive space with regular events, wellbeing initiatives, and an approachable atmosphere.

Proven impact on wellbeing

Our commitment to wellbeing is reflected in the satisfaction of our members. In our recent survey, 93% of respondents rated their overall satisfaction with wellbeing support as 9 or 10 out of 10. This positive feedback underscores the effectiveness of our initiatives in promoting a healthy and balanced work environment.
